Computer News and Reviews

AnandTech
If there is only one page to visit for computer reviews and news, this is it!
Hands down, Anand Shimpi has the most objective and professional website dedicated to sorting through the advantages & disadvantages, facts & myths of CPUs, motherboards, video cards, sound cards and other components. In a world of over-hyped, aggressive & misleading marketing, biased opinions, and an overabundance of information on the internet, Anand's website is a hobbyist's dream... and his reputation precedes him when he approaches any of the large companies for a sneak peek or preview sample. You do not have to be a techno-geek to get something out of this site... The unbiased comparisons between different brands and models of CPUs and video cards alone have saved me time and money, helping me identify my needs and balance performance with cost when researching what my next computer upgrade will be.

Tom Pabst's Hardware Guide Another excellent news and reviews site... my number two choice!

Home Networking

Home networking is getting more and more affordable and many people own more than one computer. A simple network can make home computing more enjoyable & convenient ...and a SOHO (Small Office/ Home Office) more efficient & profitable. A typical starter networking kit includes an ethernet hub, two or more ethernet cards, necessary ethernet cables, and the drivers and a setup guide. I, personally, use and endorse Netgear networking hardware. In my opinion, Netgear has 3Com-quality hardware for a much better price and Netgear's drivers are more stable. For more basic networking info, check the following sites (they are pretty repetitive but I include several guides anyway):
HardwareCentral's Ultimate Guide to Networking (3 parts): Part 1 -Intro, Networking Architecture & Hardware
Part 2 -Setting up a simple peer-to-peer network (Win9x)
Part 3 -Networking MacOS machines, Sharing Internet Access (does not incl. Win98 ICS)
Anandtech's FAQs: Basic Options for Internet Connection Sharing
Anandtech's Networking Guide: Setting up a simple peer-to-peer network (Win9x)
Ace's Hardware Networking Guide (3 parts): Part 1 -Intro, Networking Architecture & Hardware
Part 2 -Hardware setup of a simple peer-to-peer network (Win9x)
Part 3 -Software setup of a simple peer-to-peer network (Win9x)

Cable Modem/DSL & Home Networking Security Ref's

Cable modems (and Digital Subscriber Lines) offer great bandwidth for the home or small office (while leaving the phone line available). However, a lot of users may be unaware of the increased security risk that dedicated access (and a static IP) presents. What to do? To start with, consider a good firewall program like Zonelab's free ZoneAlarm for Windows. Check these sites out:
Gibson Research Corp. Highly recommended by a number of websites, this website offers several tests, including Shields UP!, allowing individuals to check for security holes in their network perimeter.
PCWorld.com 'How To' "Unsafe at High Speed: Security on Your Broadband Connection". Must read!
SysOpt.com "DSL/Cable Security Guide, Part 1" Another Must Read! Excellent three-part series of articles. Part Two is here
SpeedGuide's Cable Modem and xDSL Resources Tons of info and resources; not just security.
c|net's Bandwidth Meter How fast is your connection?
